Launch Your Ad Career–Or Just Read Pages 112-113

I’m constantly amazed how many people–even my former 1st quarter Portfolio Center students–don’t understand how the advertising agency business is structured even as they attempt to enter it. I’d like to give a shout to Stan Tymorek, a former CD at Land’s End who tries to explain the basics in Ferguson Career Launcher: Advertising & Public Relations.

It’s the kind of book I suppose you’d find in a college career center, but it’s a good overview. For both the Ad & PR industries, Stan outlays the different jobs, current state of the biz, and tips for a successful career. But the cool part is, he’s referenced and quoted lots of people, including our friend Steffan Postaer, Rob Rasmussen of R/GA, noted account planner Jon Steel–and yours truly.

There’s a glossary of industry terms in the back, and along with those he had some fun by highlighting two of my Talent Zoo columns, “On Killer Books and Hard-Hitting Executions,” and “The Importance of Filtering Actionable Jargon Into Buckets.” Call me old-fashioned, but I got a kick out of seeing my work in a real published book. This may be the first time it’s happened. So thanks, Stan.
